In my undying pursuit of coffee, I discovered a new avenue to incorporate this magical bean in my life as more than just a beverage. At Apotheque Spa in Oceanside, I indulged in a coffee facial treatment and learned about its revitalizing benefits on the skin.
I first noticed Apotheque Spa because it shines in the community as a rustic jewel only a few blocks from the beach- the attached coffee shop only piqued my interest further. Within the charmingly antiquated wooden house dripping with verdant plants, I was honored to meet the owner and trail-blazer Michelle Bartok and talk caffeinated skincare.
Michelle has been developing premium products for the global spa industry for 28 years, working with leaders such as Golden Door, The Body Shop, Mandalay Bay Spa and Hualalai Four Seasons. She is the true pioneer of the body spa world and developed Apotheque day spa; a mini go-to for old world remedies, ancient wisdoms and some of the best formulated organic products that heal from what nature provides.
Glass jars labeled "Coffee" line the apothecary styled shelves. Michelle assisted me in determining which artisan products would best suit my skin's needs.
As the luxurious coffee scrub beautified my face, Michelle, being the wealth of information that she is, shared with me the link between coffee and the skin.
We all know caffeine stimulates the mind first thing in the morning, but few realize that caffeine can also stimulate the skin and literally "perk it up".Droopiness, bags under the eyes and uneven skin tone can all be corrected with a little love from caffeine. It rejuvenates the skin with remarkable anti-inflammatory properties reducing redness and puffiness.
I followed up my coffee treatment with a refreshing green tea moisturizing mask. As you can see in this picture, the one-two punch left my face glowing . Everything is created with Michelle's pristine touch - utilizing ingredients that are prestigious and impossible to replicate. As tempting as it is to sample home coffee grounds on your face, it is crucial to understand that the grounds from your normal burr grinder is still too rough for the delicate skin on your face, especially around your eyes. Leave creating facial products to the professionals and enjoy a coffee mask to brighten your skin in the morning while you wait for your coffee to brew.
For an added indulgence, I also suggest you get some of the caviar body scrub, I don't know how I lived before having it.
After my stimulating facial treatment, I walked through the spa to the adjacent coffee shop, Succulent café. It is a peaceful sculptural garden filled with succulents masterfully arranged by the master, Peter Loyola. Peter has succulents growing out of antique doors, shoes and an eclectic collection of every ceramic shape you could imagine. On the opposite side of this patio sanctuary is his coffee kart serving up teas and Cafe Calabria coffee.
To Peter's amusement, I felt cleansed enough to forgo a detoxifying tea and went for what my "true self" wanted: a scrumptious Dirty Chai.
Feeling thoroughly pampered and rejuvenated, I ended my wonderful day sipping my chai in the peaceful surroundings of this lush sanctuary. Relaxing in this tranquil setting, I realized that our day to day lives are filled with stress and rushing about. It is very seldom that we take the time to treat ourselves to pampering and rejuvenation. Give yourself a miniature holiday in this hidden hide-a-way: you deserve it.
